Director & Professor of Practice, Public Relations Lab

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, a national model for innovative journalism and strategic communication education, seeks to hire a director to lead the ASU Public Relations Lab, an established professional program in which students develop campaigns and strategies for corporate and not-for-profit clients in an agency environment.


The director will hold the faculty rank of professor of practice and work with other faculty to prepare next-generation communications professionals by providing a laboratory experience in a professionally managed, integrated-communications agency. The director will be expected to lead a team of talented, motivated students who will provide Lab clients with a contemporary, digital POV while providing media relations, stakeholder engagement, social strategy and execution, creative small-screen content development, content amplification, research and data analysis.


The director will use a hands-on approach to teach those core public relations skills as well as related capabilities, such as client relations and project management. He or she also will work with other communications faculty and staff to develop and manage relationships with potential Lab clients globally, across the nation, regionally and in the Phoenix metropolitan area.


The award-winning Public Relations Lab is one of more than a dozen immersive professional experiences at the Cronkite School that reflect the school’s “teaching hospital” approach to communications education. The goal of these immersive experiences is to prepare Cronkite students for ethical leadership roles and rewarding impactful careers in the industries related to the communication’s discipline. Launched in fall 2011, the Public Relations Lab is designed as an intensive learning environment and operates as an agency with student teams that work on behalf of clients. Graduates have enjoyed considerable success in their careers, both at major agencies across the nation and in the corporate communications departments of global companies. The scope and ambitions of the Lab have recently expanded, and the director will be expected to help conceptualize and execute the program’s future strategy.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Leading, inspiring and teaching upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in an agency-style environment.
  • Overseeing the development of communications programs suitable to connect with diverse audiences.
  • Overseeing the design, production and editing of strategic and creative content for digital storytelling platforms.
  • Leading experimentation in the use of data-enhanced creativity.
  • Working with the directors of the Cronkite New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab and the Audience Engagement Lab to discover and teach new tools and technologies that enhance digital storytelling.
  • Forging partnerships with regional and national public relations, marketing and technology firms to create learning and working opportunities for Lab students.
  • Establishing a platform of thought-leadership designed to engage outside influencers in the work of the ASU Public Relations Lab.


Required Qualifications


At least seven years of experience in a client-oriented agency or in-house communications position, with some experience managing teams, clients and client or corporate budgets; a proven understanding of research and the use of data in developing, executing and managing communications programs; experience developing and executing creative communications concepts; experience integrating paid media into product marketing, brand development or corporate communications; experience in the use of social media platforms and analytics; a proven capability for managing the development of small-screen content on digital platforms; a collaborative, team-oriented leadership style that produced award-winning, effective communications campaigns; and a bachelor’s degree.



Desired Qualifications


Experience working in or with international markets; a high comfort level with traditional media relations techniques and media outlets; experience integrating original research into communications strategies and campaigns; familiarity with Hispanic media and Hispanic marketing; familiarity with graphic design; familiarity with creative development and data analysis tools; and familiarity with the use of paid-media tools to reach audiences.
