Job Description
The Kansas City Business Journal is looking for someone with
skills to conduct extensive local research and unlock the stories
inside. The data journalist is challenged with compiling - and
continually improving - our weekly lists and writing stories based
on in-house and external databases.
This specialist also works with colleagues throughout the newsroom,
whether teaming with other reporters on complex stories or working
with designers to tell number-driven stories graphically.
Duties
? Create and update original market research for The List, a
prime feature since our publication's founding. This includes
identifying and surveying area companies, entering information into
our database, and publishing data in print, online and in our
annual Book of Lists.
? Writing stories based on this research pointing out significant
changes and emerging trends, profiling companies and executives,
and presenting information in graphic form.
? Reporting and writing additional data-driven stories for online
and print.
? Working with other reporters and editors on larger stories and
packages.
Skills
? The drive to find new companies for surveys, to get
information from reluctant companies and identify new data sources
to continually improve our research results.
? An eye for precision - shooting to get every detail correct,
every time.
? Intellectual curiosity - The need to understand and explain
forces driving research results through the examination of our
database and interviews with local sources.
? An ability to work as part of a team and enjoy shared
success.
Experience
? Prior work in research and reporting, with published work
examples.
? Specialized training in data reporting is a plus.
