The Communications Director leads the strategic vision and implementation of UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) external and internal communications, including all activities of the JCCC Media Office. The position is responsible for creating, planning and executing communication plans for key external audiences that effectively position and promote the JCCC and UCLA Health brands. The Communications Director will also establish and manage successful creative and collaborative relationships with key UCLA partners including the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation (JCCF), UCLA Health Media & Marketing, the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM), the Broad Stem Cell Research Center (BSCRC), and other key teams.

Under supervision of JCCC leadership, the Communications Director will conceive, develop, implement, manage, assess and refine all JCCC strategic media initiatives. The position will directly supervise the JCCC Media Relations Manager (MRM) and JCCC Multimedia Officer (MMO) on a daily basis in the creation of media content (including written, audiovisual and social), and continually assess and optimize the creation and management processes in alignment with the JCCC and UCLA Health.

The Communications Director will also supervise the JCCC Digital & Analytics Officer (DAO) in the maintenance of the JCCC website and social channels, including design and coding, digital asset management, SEO strategy and implementation, CMS support, IT and staff technical support, and distribution of a monthly electronic newsletter to JCCC members. The position will also supervise the DAO in data collection and analysis for all JCCC digital properties, procurement of analytic tools and technology, assessment and refinement of industry-best metrics, and to create and present regular content performance and trends reports to JCCC leadership and related UCLA teams.

The Communications Director will establish and advance internal media communications policy for the JCCC to ensure best practices and strict adherence to UCLA policies and procedures. The position will lead media mentoring, education and training efforts for the JCCC and JCCF, including, leadership, membership and staff. The Communications Director will serve as a key thought leader for the cancer research theme as one of six functional components of the DGSOM research themes communication initiative.

Bachelor degree and at least three years of related experience. Developing and implementing short- and long-range media relations plans, and in evaluating results. Working proactively to gauge, assess and interpret new media and online consumption trends, and synergize analytics into ongoing strategies. Developing effective internal communications policy, specifically medical/health/science and cancer-related. Ability to make effective oral presentations to individuals and groups. Ability to supervise writers and producers to create consistent weekly output of media content of journalistic quality, often on tight deadline. Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to present information clearly and creatively. Master of AP style. Developing and implementing effective strategies to pitch and place media outlets for original and third-party news content. Developing effective internal communications policy, specifically medical/health/science and cancer-related. Ability to maintain, update and review website content in a timely manner, often under tight deadline. Proficiency with custom Content Management Systems (CMS). Creative asset procurement. Online content dissemination and social media tools, preferably Constant Contact and Survey Monkey. Strong graphic design and layout skills. Coordination of all aspects of publications production, including recommending topics, supervising photography, interviewing researchers and administrators, editing contributed articles, writing stories, developing production schedules and coordinating graphic design, printing, and distribution. Search engine optimization and website marketing techniques. Ability to maintain and manage all top social media networks (Facebook, etc.). Building website navigational structures and effective GUI. Demonstrated skill in planning and preparing website upgrade, maintenance and development budgets and in monitoring expenditures to assure budget compliance. Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Premiere, Microsoft Office Suite, HTML5 and CSS, with working knowledge of ASP, PHP, Java and Flash. Strong organizational skills to professionally manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with all JCCC internal staff and external agencies. Skills to establish and maintain professional working relationships with a diverse group.Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
