The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Associate, Public Relations for its affiliate Humane Society International (HSI). The main responsibility of this position will be to develop a public relations plan that includes a strategy to increase media coverage of HSI and coordinate with the director of international media (located in the UK) to lead public relations strategies and tactics for HSI global Public Relations.
This position will be responsible for:
  • Proactively developing and executing public relations plans to elevate the profile of the organization, with a focus on HSI s international work;
  • Writing, editing, and routing press releases, advisories, pitch letters and other collateral material for the news media supporting HSI s programs;
  • Working closely with HSI communications staff and consultants, to develop and implement public relations strategies tailored for a specific country or region, and providing support to achieving the best outcomes;
  • Monitoring press coverage, and cultivating and maintaining key media contacts; developing targeted lists and disseminating press releases and other materials to targeted contacts;
  • Fielding media inquiries, performing background research on inquiring reporters and routing to appropriate spokesperson; providing reporters with background information, video, and scheduling interviews with HSUS/HSI spokespeople;
  • Representing the department as a member of the internal team and to external audiences; coordinating efforts with other departments and organizations as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor s degree in public relations, communications or related field, or equivalent work experience required;
  • A minimum of seven years professional experience in a corporate and/or non-profit PR, communications strategy, and media relations, including national and international animal welfare issues required;
  • Familiarity and experience with the current media landscape as it relates to animal welfare issues strongly preferred;
  • Strong working knowledge of various media directories and public relations computer programs and processes required;
  • Must have a proven record of successful enterprising public relations efforts;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Extensive experience in media training required;
  • The ability to build and foster effective relationships;
  • The ability to travel occasionally for media cultivation and pitching in major markets, as well as
  • for press conferences or related events;
  • Prior supervisory experience is helpful as this position will be responsible for supervising interns;
  • A commitment to animal protection/welfare is highly desired.
