A private, non-profit organization, the Ad Council partners with other national non-profit organizations as well as federal government agencies to motivate measurable change around significant public issues.Together, we work with volunteer talent from leading advertising, media, social and digital communications agencies across the country to create campaigns that inspire change and improve lives throughout the U.S. The Ad Council creates sophisticated and comprehensive, integrated communication plans for each campaign that can include media outreach, consumer research, public relations, social media and numerous strategic partnership opportunities across all mediums.


Position Summary:

The Director of PR and Social Media is an integral part of the Ad Council's team responsible for developing and driving communications strategies for the Ad Council brand and its national social good campaigns, including our work with Meals on Wheels and Goodwill, as well as the iconic Smokey Bear campaign for Wildfire Prevention. The Director of PR and Social Media serves on an integrated campaign team leading all aspects of the PR/Social Media program development and implementation, such as:

  • Strategy and ideation
  • Recruiting and managing external partners
  • Cross-department collaboration
  • Developing and reviewing press materials
  • Content development
  • Community management
  • Influencer engagement
  • Media relations


He/she also contributes content and conducts research for the organization's internal and external events, conference submissions and panels, the Ad Council's blog ( and social channels, and additional opportunities to tell the Ad Council story to both constituents and consumers.


This fast-paced position is perfect for someone who has strong written and oral communication skills, is a great project manager, has an appetite for learning the latest in PR and social media trends and is passionate about social change. Whether it's working with top YouTube creators or celebrities to produce videos around a cause, managing a Twitter or Reddit chat with leading issue experts, pitching and booking stories, writing speeches and talking points for industry executives and Ad Council stakeholders or setting strategy for partner PR, social and digital agencies—your job will be to identify and manage the right targeted tactics that can truly surround an issue, reach an audience and make a difference in the world.


Background & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience in the communications industry specifically in PR and social media
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills -
  • Social Media savvy – experience with the most popular and emerging platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, etc.)
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented
  • Team Player who works well with others across departments
