The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Iowa Nutrient Research Center at Iowa State University seek applications for a science writer who will work closely with researchers to develop communication pieces such as stories, news releases, features, web and social media content, and other written and visual content. This position will focus on meeting both the college's goals and the center's goals in communicating scientific progress in agriculture, life sciences, water quality, natural resources and related areas to lay audiences. The person's work will help raise the visibility of the college's and the center's research programs to general and targeted audiences. It will help explain, illustrate and demonstrate the impact of the college and center's research portfolio for the state of Iowa and the nation. For the college, the person will write stories on diverse scientific subjects across 15 departments and over 20 research centers, from fundamental research to applied, short-term research. For the center, the person will write water quality research stories, provide content and editing expertise for reports, establish and maintain a social media presence, and develop other communications materials targeting external audiences related to research results and progress on goals in water quality and nutrient management conducted by Iowa State and collaborating scientists. The science writer position will be filled at the communications specialist III or IV level. In addition to the aforementioned duties, the communications specialist IV will develop a strategy to communicate the highest priority projects for the college and center. Additionally, the position would function more autonomously and have decision making over communicating INRC projects. The successful candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to understand the needs of today's readers and work well under deadline pressures. The successful candidate will work well with a team and possess strong time management, problem solving and project management skills.
Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience. Supplemental Required Education and Experience The requirements above are for the Communications Specialist III. Communications Specialist IV: Bachelor's degree and 3 years of related experience. Experience for either position must include demonstrated professional experience translating science and technology information and concepts to nonscientific readers, general public and targeted audiences. Preferred Education and Experience Degree in journalism, communications, or agricultural communications.
